THE NEW CHAIBMAN MR. W. B. OARLOW CHOSEN DEPUTY POST TO MR. DONALD The new chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board is Mr. W. B. Darlow, North Shore boroughs' representative, who was chosen at an election held at the annual meeting yesterday. Mr. Darlow was nominated by Mr. Hendry Luke and Mr. H. R. Mackenzie. The honorarium was fixed at £2OO, the same as before. There were only two candidates for the position, the other being Mr. R. T. Reid, who was proposed by Mr. A. S. Sutherland and seconded by Mr. T. A. Bishop.
The deputy-chairmanship went to Mr. J. B. Donald, who was nominated by Mr. J. H. Frater and Mr. J. H. Kinnear. The other nominee, Mr. Hendry Luke, was proposed by Mr. Harvey Turner and Mr. T. A. Bishop. The board's representative on the Chamber of Commerce will be Mr. J. B. Donald. A member of the board for the past t-even years, Mr. D.arlo\v was deputychairman last year. He has been the board's representative on the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce for the past five years, and has been a member of the committee of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association. Further experience in public affairs was gained by Mr. Darlow on the Waitemata Electric-Power Board, the Northcote and Birkenhead Borough Councils and the Northcote and Birkenhead school committees.
Air. Darlow, who lives at Birkenhead, is a well-known leather goods manufacturer, and is also chairman of directors of Birkenhead Transport, Limited. He stood for Parliament as an Independent in the Waitemata electorate in 1931, but was defeated by the then sitting member, Mr. A. Harris. Mr. Darlow is 52 years of age and was born at Waimamakau, near Hokianga. First elected to the board in 1935 as one of tho four city members, Mr. Donald is a well-known businessman. Fifty-eight years of age, and an Aucklander by birth, he is the second son of the late Mr. A. B. Donald, who many years ago founded the firm of Donald and Edenborough, merchants and Island traders. He entered his father's business on completing his education at Queen's College in Upper Queen Street, and has been associated with the firm fo A. B. Donald, Limited, for about 40 years. He is now manag-ing-director. Manifesting a keen interest in politics. Mr. Donald won the Auckland East seat for the United Party in the general election in 1928. He later held the portfolios of Postmaster-General, Minister of Customs and Minister of Industries and Commerce. Mr. Donald did not contest the 1931 election.
