OBITUARY

DR. T, M. BEALE [BY TELEGRAPH—►OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday The death has occurred of Dr. Thomas Miles Beale, a prominent specialist in 'nervous and mental diseases. He was for nine years assistant medical officer at Sunnyside Mental Hospital. Dr. Beale was educated at Cambridge University, where he distinguished himself in athletics, Rugby football,, and cricket. He secured his Blue in football. He was for some years in practice in London. His studies in tropical diseases took him to the Tongan Islands There lie contracted a disease which necessitated the amputation of both legs. Dr. Beale took up practice in Auckland just before the Great War. From 1916 to 1925 he was assistant medical officer at Sunnyside Mental Hospital. Since then ho had had a private consulting practice. He is survived by his widow. MR. HARRY SPURDLE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday One of the first white children born at Waitara, Mr. Harry Spurdle, ha 3 died at Waitara in his 68th year. In early life ho was employed for some time by the Post and Telegraph Department before joining his father, Mr. 0. Spurdle, who was a wheelwright, and was employed in that trade for the remainder of his life.

Keenly interested in all town affairs Mr. Spurdle had boon secretary of the Waitara Jockey Club until it went out of existince, of the Clifton Football Club for over .'SO years, the Waitara Sports Club for a .number of years and of the original Waitara Band, of which he was a playing member. Ho was also secretary of the Clifton Bowing Club for 50 years from its inception until its jubilee a few months ago. .

Mr. Spurdle was a member of the Waitara Borough Council and the Waitara Harbour Board for over 2o years and of the Waitara Fire Board since it was formed. For a time he was chairman. Mr. Spurdle, whose wife died seven months ago, leaves one son and four daughters.

MRS. MARTHA LEE [from our own correspondent J HAMILTON, Friday

The deatli occurred at her residence, Tawa Street, Melville, last evening, of Mrs. Martha Lee, at the Age of Wl. Mrs. Lee was horn at Ripley, Derbyshire. where she was educated. Uefore her marriage to Mr. Richard Lee, she was j) school teacher. About 60 years ago, Mr. and, Mrs. Lee came to Now Zealand and settled 'in Wellington, where Mr. Lee was engaged as an engineer's fitter. Later the family moved to Okoroiro, where Mr. and Mrs. Lee farmed for 15. years. In 1918 they came, to live in Hamilton. Mr. Lee died in 19,11. Deceased is survived ,by three sons and two daughters There are "W grandchildren and 50 great-grand-children. *
