LINK WITH DOMINION j BLACK WATCH- IN ENGLAND English sporting journals are not always accurate in references to Australian and New Zealand bloodstock. For example, in relating the performances of Martara in India, he is constantly referred to as an Australianbred horfce. Recent reference wris made to the good performer and sire Black Watch as carrying the best New Zealand strains back to England, ivhereas lie coiffes from an Australian mare. • > ■ •• ■ The history of Black Watch is worth recalling. His dam, Punka, by CoOltrim from Drowsy, was bred in Australia and raced in the Dominion first for Mr. J. B. Heid, winning the New Zealand Oaks, and later for Mr. W. H. Gaisford, for whom she won the Marton and Woodville Cups. Punka was a good, though not a great performer, as has been claimed, but she proved herself as a brood mare when takeil. to England by Mr. Heid.

There, as Punka 111, she arrived in foal to Archery, but the foal, born to English time, met with an accident and had to be destroyed. The mnre was then mated with Black Gauntlet, and Black Watch was the result. Ah a two-year-old, racing under lease to Mr. L. Neumann, Black Watch won three of liis five races, including tho Gimcrack Stakes. As a tlireo-year-old, he ran third in Felstend's Derby. At tho stud, Black Watch has produced a number of handicap winner*. Black Gauntlet, sire of Black Watch, was by John o' Gaunt from Usaa, a Srolific producer of good winners, by [night of Malta, a son of Galopin. Punka's sire, Cooltrim, was by Flying Fox, whose second dams were by Galopin on both sides, from Gallinnria, whose second dam also was a Galopin mare. Drowsy, dam of Punka, was by Ayr Laddie, son of Aryshire. whose dam was a Galopin mare. Drowsy'u dam, Slumber,' was ■ sister to Wakeful,• generally conceded to be the greatest mare the Australian turf has produced. The outcross of Galopin blood, made so valuable ic. the Antipodes through St. Simon, is of special interest in the case of Black Watch.
