THE LEAGUE CODE

INTER-ISLAND MATCH NORTH AND SOUTH TEAMS CARLAW PARK ATTRACTION GREAT GAME ANTICIPATED The inter-Island Rugby League match, which will be played at Carlaw Park to-morrow afternoon is arousing great interest in view of the forthcoming visit of the New Zealand team to Australia. As a curtain-raiser a trial match will bo played in which some of the outstanding players in New Zealand are to participate. The New Zealand team to make the tour will be selected after the matches to-morrow.

Providing the weather and ground conditions are favourable a great match should result in the inter-Island fixture. The south forwards have always been a difficult proposition for the North Island and it is stated that the southerners have a fine all-round vanguard this year. In addition they will be favoured if the weather is wet and the ground heavy. Practically all the vanguard is new to Carlaw Park patrons and it will bo interesting to note whether the pack has gained the same knowledge of the finer points of the game as that enjoyed by tho north forwards. Outstanding Players

An outstanding player in the southern forwards is W. Glynn, who has played in five successive inter-Island matches. Considerable interest will centre in G. Orman, a recruit from the Rugby game, who is a fine hooker. Orman participated in the All Black trial matches last season. Barnard and Clark are two forwards weighing 14st. and are said to be in the first flight. Tho South Island will be represented by a solid rearguard, which may give its opponents much trouble providing it receives a fair share of the ball from tho scrums. It is expected that Orman will serve his backs well in this respect. In the threequarter line Davidson and Brown are well-known players, the former having-played some fine games at Carlaw Park. Brown was formerly a Canterbury Rugby representative, who has played for .two seasons in England. Any of the inside backs, providing they come up to the required standard, will have bright prospects of inclusion in the New Zealand side. The North Island team is a strong, allround combination and except for two changes is the side which represented Auckland against The Rest of the North Island last Wednesday and had such an easy victory. Cooles, Wellington, finds a place in the forwards, and Midgley, Auckland, replaces McNeil on the wing. If playing conditions are favourable .the North side can be expected to prcvide some brilliant .football, whilo the southern team if perhaps lacking in the same combination, has some fine individualists.

Since 15)25, the inter-Island match has resulted:—l92s, North won. 27 —0; 192G, North won, 81 —22; 1927, North won, 13 — 8; 1928, North won. 44 —S; 1929, South won, 22 —13; 1930.. drawn, 22-all; 1931, North won, 52—23; 1932, North won, 27 — IS; 1933, no match; 1934. North won. 36 — 18; 1935, North won, 19—18; 1930, North won. 21 —10; 1937, no match. Personnel of the Teams The teams for the inter-Island match are as follows:

CURTAIN-RAISER TRIAL APPEARANCE OF NEPIA s The curtain-raiser trial to the inter-Island match will probably be equally as interesting as the principal contest. No doubt some of the players in these teams will be selected in the New Zealand team. An added attrac-tion-in this match will be the appearance of G. Nepia at fnllback. The teams are as follows: Probables.—Fullback, F. Furnell (Richmond); threequarters, W. Broughton (Manukau), I. Rata (City), T. Chase (Manukau), R. Whitley (Canterbury); five-eighths. E. REQUEST DECLINED ' FURTHER TRIAL MATCH Speaking against a request from the Canterbury Rugby League for a further trial match next Wednesday, Mr. J. A. Redwood, president of the New Zealand Rugby League, stated last evening that ho was of the opinion that the New Zealand team should be chosen after to-morrow's games as was previously the intention of the council. Mr. H. Wilson, West Coast, said he was not satisfied that the selectors had had the best opportunities of seeing the southern players in action. He would strongly support the request of Canterbury for'a further trial. Mr. C. D. McCready, Canterbury, expressed the opinion that only 13 players should be chosen »fter to-morrow's match. This was the view of the South Island selector, Mr. J. Amos, who also desired a further trial, as there were no replacements in the North v. South Island game. .' It was eventually decided that a further trial was not necessary, and that the present arrangements for the selection of tho New Zealand team should be proceeded with tomorrow evening. The Inangahua League wrote asking that the vice-captain >of the New Zealand team should be appointed from the southern members of the touring party. Mr. Redwood said the request would be noted, but the appointment of captain and vice-captain would be decided at a meeting tc-morrow evening, following the selection of tho team. Mr. W. J. Taylor raised the question of instructions to the selectors as to how many specialists in key positions should be chosen. He said from previous experience additional hookers and halfbacks were very essential under Australian conditions.

Several delegates expressed the opinion that the selectors should be given a free hand. It was decided to include two recognised halfbacks and two hookers in the 22 players selected. After a brief discussion following a deputation from the Auckland Rugby League and several letters it was decided to confirm an earlier decision that no official visitors should accompany the New Zealand team to Australia.

Messrs. N. A, Kyle and R. Doble were appointed managers of the North and South Island teams respectively. On the recommendation of the West Coast League the reinstatement of W. McKcnzie, W. A. Spier, W. Naylor and N. Adams was approved. * Following a notice of motion by Mr. N. A. Kyle. Taranaki, it was decided to rescind a previous resolution, and in the North and South Island match replacements will be permitted up to half-time.
