QUARRY FATALITY
CONTRACTOR'S DEATH VERDICT OF MISADVENTURE [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHAKATANE, Thursday A verdict of death by misadventure was returned by the coroner, Mr. G. A. Brabant, when the inquest into the death of Mr. Jesse Joseph Appleton, a Main Highways Board contractor, of Whakatane, was concluded this morning. Mr. Appleton was killed in a fall of pumice in a quarry at Pikowai on April 26. He had just driven a truck into the face of the quarry when it collapsed. Another workman was caught while running clear, but was dug out. alive after being buried for some minutes. The evidence did not disclose any carelessness 911 the part of. the workmen, the opinion being advanced that the fall was the result of heavy rains or the vibration induced by passing trains. All the workers were experienced men.
