CENTENNIAL AVENUE

SCHEME FOR DOMAIN CHOICE OF NATIVE TREES ft CITY COUNCIL'S APPROVAL Plans for the planting of a commemorative avenue of native trees along the new drive now under construction in the Domain were submitted to the City Council last night by the Auckland Provincial Centennial Council. The City Council was asked to approve the scheme and make available from its nursery supplies between 1500 and 2000 established native trees that would be suitable for transplanting in February, 1940.

This avenue is intended to bo one of the permanent memorials of the centennial year and the line of the now road from Stanley Street to the ornamental ponds has been chosen as it lends itself admirably to this form of treatment. It is proposed to include kauris, riinus, totaras, puriris, pohutukawas, titokis and other natives in the scheme and to provide a ground base of pittosporum, olearia and veronica.

It was explained to the council last night that the preparatory work and ground trenching in readiness for planting would occupy six meu for about 12 months and the Centennial Executive was asking the Government to grant n subsidy to cover the fidl labour costs. It was understood that the preparation and presentation of the trees would not involve the council in any actual cost'and it was asked that the council should approve the' scheme, agree to .the., gift ,oJr -the trees, and instruct its officials concerned to co-operate to the fullest extent in tho development of the scheme. On the motion of the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, the council expressed its approval of tho scheme and referred the'application to the Parks Committee, with power to act.
