WOMEN POLL HEAVILY

HOOLIGANS IN THE RAND JEWS' CARS WRECKED CAPETOWN, May IS A feature of the voting in the South African general election to-day was the heavy and consistent poll of women, who outnumbered the men. The campaign was comparatively quiet nntil last night, when outside districts in the Rand were given over to hooliganism and the wrecking of cars belonging to Jews.

The police cleared the streets in the poorer class district.

There are 150 seats in the South African House of Assembly, of which 146 are being contested by 354 candidates. The other four have been filled by the unopposed return of United Party (Government) supporters. The principal Opposition Party, the Republican group, self-styled "purified Nationalists" having 104 candidates led by Dr. Malan, aims at the establishment of • an independent Republic. Other opposition groups are the Dominion Party, with 33 candidates, which appeals exclusively to the British element, Labour, with 36 candidates, and Independents, with 35 candidates.

The state of parties at the dissolution was: Government, 117; Republicans, 20; Dominion Party, 5; Labour, 4; Independents, 4.
