AERODROME BOMBED CLAIM BY REPUBLICANS ITALIAN MACHINES DESTROYED VATICAN RECOGNISES FRANCO By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received May 17, 8.50 p.m.) LONDON, May 17 Twelve Spanish Republican bombers attacked the Nationalist aerodrome at Caude, north-west of Teruel, and claim to have completely destroyed 25 Italian Fiat aeroplanes which were preparing to take the air, says a message from Madrid. The Holy See has recognised General Franco's "Government" and has appointed Monsignor Cicognani Apostolic Nuncio to Burgos, where it has hitherto been represented by a Charge d'Affaires, says the Vatican City correspondent of the British United Press. A former Minister, Senor Mesia, lias been appointed Ambassador to the Vatican by General Franco. The loyalist Commander-in-Chief, General Miaja, has appointed Colonel Sigismundo Casado to the command on the Madrid front and Colonel Jose Salis to succeed Colonel Casado in command in Southern Spain.
