GOLF CONTESTS

LADIES' TOURNAMENT 9 OPEN EVENTS AT ROTORUA qualifying rounds played POOR SCORING GENERAL [bT telegraph —OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Tuesday Disappointing scoring was general in the two qualifying rounds of the open championship of the Rotorua Ladies' Golf Club, which were played at the Arikikapakapa links to-day. Tho tournament attracted a full entry of 92 players. With so many low handicap playerfc engaged, the P° or scoring was unaccountable. jli sg J. Duncan, of AVanganui, the holder of the championship, who plays on a handicap of five, took 87 gross in tho morning and on# JO° re ' n afternoon, and was the ninth to qualifr- Tho best all-round display of tho day w«* that of Miss P. Bell, the 18-year-old geafleld (Wanganui) player, who returned a grow »c° r ® °* 8 - in tho morning and 70 in the afternoon, to lead the qualifiers with a gross, 161, Mrs. E. Barker (Rotorua) and Mrs. p, R. Glanville (Te Awamutu) were next in order with' 307, whilo Miss M. Illston (Manaia) and Miss A. Orinond (Napier) both played steady, but not brilliant., golf to bo /ourth and fifth with a gross 109. Mrs. Foreman, the Miramar two handicap player, played disastrous golf in the morning to return a gross 01, but in the afternoon ibe improved by seven strokes and qualified twelfth. Mrs. R. Deighton, of Titirangi, also found much trouble, and with Mrs. L. Day, of Hamilton, was the last to qualify for the championship. The best gross score of the morning round was returned by Mrs. G. W. Foote, of Whangarei, whose scoro of SI gave her a ntcdal score of 70, but iu the afternoon she took 0-1 jnd qualified eleventh. In the afternoon, Miss J. Stewart, of Whangarei, also returned a gross 79. an improvement of 13 strokes ou her card of the morniug. Miss S. Curtis, the 10-year-old New Plymouth competitor, who reached the semi-final of the Taranaki championship last week, took two ninety-fives, and failed to qualify for either the championship or the Arikikapakapa Cup contest. An unfortunate feature of the play was that many of the competitors were unable to complete their second rounds before darkness set. In the majority of cases where' the ball had to be picked up, the competitors had little chance of qualifying for either of the major competitions, but it is probable that those who did complete their rounds in the half light «:ould have clone considerably better had the last few holes been played under more favourable conditions.
