LIQUOR FOR MAORIS
OFFENCE AT PUKEKOHE [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Tuesday "Thero has been a great deal of trouble at. Pukekohe lately as a result of Maori women being supplied with liquor by unscrupulous pakehas, but this is the first man we have caught for nearly a year," said Sergeant J. T. Cowan, when James Harris, of Pukekohe, appeared before Mr. \\. H. Freeman, S.M., on three charges relating to tho supply of liquor to Maori women. Mr. M. R. Griorson said there was no suggestion that Harris bad sold the liquor. He was an old man and had some drink himself. Three ' Maori women followed him to his hut, and they actually helped themselves to his liquor. When the police entered he was telling them 1o go away. He was very foolish in not stopping them from drinking his beer. Sergeant Cowan said the man had been warned previously about supplying liquor to Maori women. Harris was fined £2 on the first charge and was convicted and discharged on tho other two.
