Vice-Admiral Cunningham entered the Royal Navy in 1898. During the European War he was president of a sub-commission of the Naval InterAllied Commission of Control. From 1933 to 1936 he was rear-admiral commanding destroyer flotillas attached to the Mediterranean Fleet.
