MAORI MARRIAGE
MAN'S APPEARANCE IN COURT ADMITTED TO PROBATION [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday A condition that prisoner must leave the district in which he had lived and keep away for two years was one of the terms of probation imposed on George Eketone, aged 35,. a Maori labourer, of Kawhia, who appeared tor sentence before the Chief Jiu&fcic©, Sir Michael Mvers, in the Supreme--Court at Hamilton to-day for f carnally; knowing a girl of 14 years.. It was 3 stated during the hearing of the trial that accused had, with the consent, of the girl's parents, contracted aMaonjmarriage The jury recommended mercy.Mr. J. F. Strang said*an* effort was being made to have the girl'' admitted to a church home for girls. His Honor admitted prisoner to probation for two years on the condition stated. Prisoner was -also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, £2a lSs Bd. His Honor ■ said be did - not wish to send Eketone to prison, hs had to consider to some extent the views of the Maoris, but at the same time they must understand they would not be permitted to flout the law.
