ENGLISH RUGBY
SUGGESTIONS FOR REFORM A suggestion that two fullbacks would be more effective in attack than four threequarters was made recently bv Captain R. G. Coventry, president of the Worcester Rugby Club and an old Oxford Blue. Stating that Rugby football was becoming rather hidebound and sterootvped, he added that the old formation of three threequarters and the half-backs acting at scrum-lialf or stand-off, . according to which side of the field play was on, produced a more open game and greater cleverness. . . "Whiles introduced four threequarters to counter the brilliance of the English threequarters, and England introduced wing-forwards to check the Welsh backs. They are now approaching a dead end," said Captain Coventry, "and a possible way out will be two fullbacks both necessarily good players. They would have many opportunities of initiating attacks. The fullback often gets the ball with no one in front of him and is too frightened to run because everyone shouts 'kick.' "
