HISTORY OF PROGRESS TROTTING IN WAIKATO PAST WINNERS MAKE GRADE SUCCESS OF STAR PRONTO . The popularity of the Waikato Trotting Club's Winter Meeting lias increased each season since the first fixture was hold in May, 1935, followed by a special meeting in June. The totalisator turnover for the first meeting was £7894, and £903:! at the second meeting, both for seven races. With an extra race in 1936, investments rose to £12,207, but this was eclipsed last May, when the returns * soared to £20.190. Somo earlier winners at Claudelands have reached a high grade subsequently. King's Play, who won the President's Handicap, 1936, and last year was narrowly beaten by Kewpie's King in the Kaipaki Handicap, has reached the first flight of Dominion pacers. Five trotters —Waikato Prince, Captain Bolt, Great Admiral, Meadow King and Franz Derby—who were successful at Claudelands under winter conditions, have graduated to a much higher class, and havo raced successfully in the South Island. Star Pronto has shown fine form at May meetings, winning the Ruakura Handicap and' Waipa Handicap in 1935, and the Newstead Handicap the following year from 72 yards behind in a 3.40 class. Star Pronto last' month won the 3.23 Fergusson Handicap at Auckland and is engaged in the Kaipaki Handicap to-day. Hearsay won his first race at the winter meeting two seasons ago, when he defeated Bedford, who was making his first appearance Winaway, in 1936, after following King's Play home in the chief raco, won the sprint. Tryment has been placed every time she has started at Claudelands. Lady Amanda, who showed glimpses of returning form this season, was a winner in 1935, and the following year, Cherrill defeated Tryment in the riders' event. In the saddle race to-day they meet at the same terms.

At both winter meetings of 1935, Kai Kaha, then in R. A. McMillan's stable, was placed in novice events. He has raced continuously since, without leaving the maiden ranks. Bismuth won his first race at Claudelands for J. T. Paul. Last year's meeting was notable for the dual success of Kewpie's Crest. This horse and Musketeer figure in the Autumn and Kaipaki Handicaps and both race well under winter conditions. Lady Bunker won the Eureka Handicap for trotters last May, from Grand Triumph, who has since won on the course.
