MEAT IN LONDON
PRICES AT SMITHFIELD LAMB MARKET EASIER DECLINE IN CHILLED BEEF An easier feeling is prevalent in the lamb market at Smithfield as higher prices are tending to reduce consumption, especially in view of the lower prices of lioine-killed lamb, states the weekly report of the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. In the market for mutton trade is slow. Wethers and ewes are steady with prices unchanged. Chilled beef is easier, particularly fores, owing to heavy supplies and warm weather. Frozen beef quotations are nominal. . New Zealand porker pigs are easier owing to the poor demand. Baconers tend to be easier owing to lower bacon
The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases ot mutton or lambs or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores. In the case of chilled beef, the rates represent the approximate prices realised for the week at per lb. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should bo deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week, and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer. ;
NEW ZEALAND LAMB ' SALES IN- CANADA LONDON PRICES REALISED [bt telegraph—owy correspondent] WELLINGTON, Friday Trial shipments of New Zealand lamb to Toronto and other markets in Eastern Canada are reported to have been very successful. In on interview last evening the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, said the first shipment had all been sold at prices at least equivalent to those ruling on the London market. Thfe second shipment of lamb by the Huntingdon had also sold freely at good prices. These satisfactory sales, said Mr. Nash, were due to the tariff adjustments secured as a result of the negotiations carried out when lie was iu Ottawa, and subsequently confirmed in a trade arrangement with the Canadian Government. The duty on New Zealand lamb was reduced from, three cents to half a cent a pound, it was another indication of tho Government's activity in searching for alternative markets for Now Zealand's primary products. •Reference to the same subject was also made by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, tho Hon. D. G. Sullivan. Commenting on the news which had been cabled by the New Zealand Trade Commissioner in Canada, Mr. Sullivan said that Eastern Canada was eager to accept New Zealand lamb. He was pleased to state that the trial shipments were meeting with ready sales. "The initial shipment of oOOQ carcases has been cleared at satisfactory prices," added tho Minister, ' and the second shipment of 3000 carcases is going quickly into consumption in Toronto, stocks being almost exhausted in that centre."
