THEFT OF COAT
USED IN YACHT RACE PENALTY OF £5 IMPOSED Charged with stealing an oilskin coat, valued at 30s, the property of William Elliott, between January 16 and 21, a motor trimmer, Henry Charles Reid, appeared before Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Accused, who was represented by Mr. Aekins, pleaded not guilty. The evidence showed that the coat had been lent by complainant to a fellow employee, who had kept it in the wash-house of his father's home. Accused had been in the employ of the latter for two years, but bad left in January to take part in the Tasraan yacht race in the yacht Wayfarer. Accused in evidence stated that ho had been lent the coat for the yacht race. It was left on board another yacht on his return and lie had made several attempts to recover it. "Accused's story is unbelievable, said the magistrate. "He has only aggravated an offence which would have been simple if he had owned up to it in the first place. Ho is very close to getting imprisonment." Accused was fined £o and costs, in default 14 days' imprisonment.
