MOTHERS AND DAUGHTERS ORIGINAL MUSICAL ITEMS ARTISTIC TABLE DECORATIONS Attractively decorated tables, a programme of original musical numbers, and a spirit of goodwill and fellowship were features of tho mother and daughter banquet held last night by the Auckland Young Women's Christian Association in tho assembly hall. The tables, which were occupied by members of seven different sections of tli9 association, and their mothers were decorated mainly in a colour scheme of orange and yellow, but as the decorations wero competitive each had its individual note of beauty and originality. Tho judge was Mrs. S. 0. English, who awarded the first prizo to the Kia Ora Club, the second prize to the Business Girls' Fraternity and the third to tho Progressive Club. The Winning Designs A colour scheme of green and white had been used by the decorators of the winning table and of gold and primrose by the latter two. In each case a considerable sense of beauty, balance and colour had been shown in tho decorations. The board of directors' table, which was highly commended by Mrs. English, revealed a sense of humour also, the decorators having used cardboard cut-outs of stalwart policemen in blue as place cards. During the course of the banquet several toasts were honoured, tho toast mistress being Mrs. C. Hynes, chairman of the Women's Council. The toast "Our Mothers" was proposed by Miss F. Smytheman and replied to by Mrs. Hoy; that of "Our Daughters" was proposed by Mrs. Sullivan and replied to by a member of the Good Companions' Club; "Our Guests" by Mrs. Murdock was replied to by Dr. Hilda Northcroft; "Our Association" was proposed by M. Rudd, president of the association, and replied to in song by the girls. Items and Competitions The programme, which was interspersed with community singing, included original songs by the Business Girls' Fraternity, the Mothers' Club, tho Scottish Women's Club, Good Companions, Progressive Club and Kia Ora Club. A number of burlesque items were also performed by the girls, while amusing competitions included the making from coloured paper of "the type of hat that mother used to wear." These were judged by Mrs. Victor Macky. The programme, which was in the charge of the general secretary, Miss Elsie Bonnet, was notable for its brightness and originality and was thoroughly enjoyed by the guests. Special guests at the banquet were: ' Mrs. S. 0. English. Mrs. A. D. Campbell, Mrs. Victor Macky, Mrs. S. S. Langstone and Dr. Hilda Northcroft, the latter being presented with a bouquet of poinsettias by the president, Mrs. Rudd, who congratulated her on | her election to tho Auckland Hospital Board. There were 250 present at the function, which proved one of the most enjoyable of its kind to bo held by tho association.
