DEFENCES OF BRITAIN In view of the troubled state' of affairs in Europe 50 years ago. and" the ever-present fear of invasion by sea, a statement by the London Daily " Telegraph that Great Britain was inadequately prepared for any sudden* emergency aroused consternation in thf: rountry. The following extract- from' the New Zealand Herald of May 14 ' j 1888. contains the gist of the paper.'* indictment: —
"the Daily Telegraph, in the.coursV' of an article on the defences of Great \ Britain, states that the army is endangered through not being armed with: 'letter weapons. It mentions that th< .rcapons now in use are the worst li - the world, and not the modem breerh loader It asserts that all along tin- • iine of coastal defence the warship* are practically without guns and am-, munition and the equipment is both ' -md defective."
