THAMES FINANCES IMPROVE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] THAMES. Thursday There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the parishioners of St. George's Church, j "It was reported that the finances had improved during the year. All debts had been paid and there was a credit balance. The vicar, the Rev. S. B. It. G'orbin, said there was still room 'for improvement, and he hoped to extend ..further the envelope system in the parish. The new lady chapel erected in the "cfiurch, he said, was " a joy to .worshippers, and a great help for weekday services. The election of officers resulted:— * Vicar's warden, Mr. S. C. Willis; people's warden, . 'Mr. C. Hockley; vestry, Messrs. D. R. McCowatt, C. H. Poulgrain, A. Honeybun, H. E. Harden, K. Adams, j. A. Bailey, R. Fowler and A. Ross. A resolution was passed to the effect that the meeting viewed with alarm the expressed intention of the Minister of Education to seek the sanction of Parliament to abolish the right of school committees to allow the observance of religious exercises in the primary schools before the actual school starting time. PUKEKOHE DISTRICT [fbom our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Thursday In the Pukekohe parochial district the annual meetings of St. Andrew's Church, Pukekohe, and St. Paul's Church, Buckland, adopted budget proposals for approximately £BSO, and tho extension of the weekly freewill offering envelope system was unanimously decided upon as the best means of fulfilling the budget requirements. Officers were elected as follows: Pukekohe.—Vicar's warden, Mr. W. T. Cheeseman; people's warden, Mr. 6. Haslam; church committee. Messrs. L. J. Bayly, L. K. Brown, H. Curd, J. P. Carter, N. C. Davenport, A. V. Fox, R. Harris, P. Mills, G. Paync> and F. Rayner; secretary and treasurer, Mr. G. Haslam. Buckland. —Vicar's warden, Mr. H. I. Wilcox; people's warden, Mr. M. J. Barrett; church committee, Miss Picgott, Mesdames C. Butcher and R. King, and Messrs. F. L. Goodsell, A. F. Hewitt, H. Jamieson, F. Lewis. P. G. Osmond, A. W. Potter and G. Wilcox; secretary and treasurer, Mr. G Wilcox. The following, with the vicar, tho Rev. A. E. Prebble, as chairman, are on tho central vestry for the parochial district:—Messrs. Fox, Haslam, Bayly, Brown, Carter, Curd, H, I. Wilcox, Osmond, Marrett and G. Wilcox. Tho representatives on the diocesan synod are Messrs., E. D. Wilkinson and Curd. At both meetings resolutions of protest were passed against the expressed intention of the Minister of Education to terminate tho daily voluntary religious exercises in the State primary schools. CHRIST CHURCH, WHANGAREI [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Thursday The annual meeting of the parishioners of Christ Church was-held recently. The vicar, tho Rev. H. T. Steele, presided. Reports on tho church's activities showed that tho parish account closed with a small credit balance. The vicar drew the attention of parishioners to tho great demands made on the clergy by the wide and scattered parish, and spoke of the poor response in many district churches, to the attempts mado to provide the people with the services of the church. Mr. Geo. Woolley was appointed vicar's warden and Mr. M. Porter parishioner's warden. Messrs. A. M. Woods and F. Higginson were nominated as synodsmen. 9 '
