A charge of unlawfully converting to his own • use on April 24 a ■ motor-ear,-, valued at £3OO, the property of Zillah Ellingham, -was preferred against Selwyn; George .Harris, aged ;.23, hair-. dresser, in the Police 'Court yesterday. Further charges were brought of obtaining £ls by a valueless cheque from Alfred Hayter at Whakatane on April 11, and obtaining £3 Is 3d in money and £4 6s 7d in goods by a valueless cheque >'at Napier on January 2»; Accused'. pleaded.-guilty'.,to all charges. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said; accused had previously been working, m Napier. He returned there early this year, and stayed with his former ieinploy supplied him with meals and -board. Accused disappeared from Napier on January 28. It was later found that he had obtained groceries with a cheque stolen from his previous, employer. Accused then returned to Auckland, where he. removed the car from a garage at the. home of his mother on April 4., On the way to tiis-1 borne the car was damaged and was left in Gisborne by accused. On .the retlirn journey - he obtained _ a blank cheque from a Maori and he filled it in for £ls and cashed it in a hotel. Mr. McHugh said accused had been m trouble, for some. time. • . - , •r" .Accused was -.sentenced to two years reformative on each charge, the sentences to bo concurrent.
