MAYOBS AND COUNCILS HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION RESULTS IN THE PROVINCE > ■ Further results of local body elections in boroughs in the Auckland Province have been received. The voting was for the election of Mayors, councils, and hospital, harbour aud power board representatives, and in some centres the half-holiday question came up for decision, Heavy polling is reported, particularly in Tauranga and Paeroa. Whangarei.—Council: A recount of the votes alters the position of the ninth member. F. C. H. Cowan is now declared elected, and C. Wayniouth was unsuccessful.
AT HEAD OF POLL CITY COUNCIL SURPRISE LARGE VOTE OBTAINED One of the surprises in the municipal elections in the city was the vote gained by Mr. A. S. Bailey, who topped the poll for the City Council with a total of 22,553, or 1368 more than the votes polled by the next highest candidate, Mr. J. Sayegh. Mr. Bailey has not been prominently associated with any local body but was one of the candidates supported by the Citizens and Ratepavers' Association. Mr. Bailey is governing director of the Felton-Waikato Transport Company, which was recently taken over by the Government, and for the past four vears has been president of the New Zealand Road Transport Alliance. He is also vice-president and a member of the executive of the Crippled Children's Society, a member of the executive of the Auckland Grammar School Old Boys' Association, and is a director of Pukemiro Collieries, Limited.
