GOLFING CRICKETERS

AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND Of the 1G Australian cricketers now in England, all but a few are ardent golfers. As with the 1037 New Zealand side, many opportunities will be presented for a round of golf to take the strain of the tour, off their shoulders. Before they are finished, most of the golf-minded cricketers will have played on nearly all the famous courses of England and Scotland.

On a previous tour, some of the men had so many golf bags in the luggage compartment that Bradman was led to ask whether they played cricket as a side-line. Since then, Bradman himself has been conquered bv the small white ball.

Members of the present Australian side who play frequently and , have respectable handicaps are: —Bradman, McCahe, Fleetwood-Smith, Hassett, Barnes, Brown, Fingleton and Barnett. McCabe played in the New South Wales amateur championship last year, and gave a creditable performance. Bradman plays off a handicap of 7, and hits almost as long a ball as Jim Ferrier. lie is a member of tlie Glenelg Club, South Australia, and recently won the club title. Woodlands (Melbourne) has several cricketers of note in its members, including FleetwoodSmith, the two Nagels, and two former internationals —Alex Hurwood, who toured England with Woodfull's team in 1930 and Warwick Armstrong, a former Australian Nl. captain.

Hassett, the South Melbourne batsman, is a. prominent member of the East Ceelonp; Coif Club, and will he the virtual scratch player of the team. His handicap is (3. Golf has been a relaxation for many prominent players on tour, and in a long drawn out programme of cricket it helps to keep them from going stale.
