SAFE REMOVED
SUM OF £2OO STOLEN WHAKATANE STORE ENTERED FIRM'S BOOKS ALSO MISSING [by telegraph OWN correspondent] WHAKATANE, Monday Thieves entered the Whakatane branch of the Farmers' Trading Company during the week-end and removed the safe and its contents, consisting of between £l5O and £'2oo, and the books of the firm. The back door of the premises opening on to Clifton Road was forced open, and the safe taken from the office at the front of the building on the Strand. Nothing is reported to be missing from the stock. The safe was not a large one, but it was too heavy for one man to carry away. It is thought that the thieves used a motor vehicle. The borough night watchman about 1.30 or 2 o'clock on Sunday morning heard a noise near the Commercial Hotel at the other end of the Strand. He investigated but found nothing amiss. It is believed that the noise was made to attract his attention, while the door of the premises was forced.
