EXPANSION OF RUSSIA The expansion of Russia wag the cans* of recurrent agitation in Europe 50 years ago, and fears that she \yas contemplating the occupation of Bulgaria preparatory to making a move 011 Constantinople were increased by the knowlodge that such action would have tha tacit consent of France* The following extract from the. New Zealand Herald ol May o. 1888, reveals the seriousness of the situation:— "The European situation is rapidly assuming an alarming aspect. So grave, indeed, is it iu the judgment of those in a position to be well informed that Lord Salisbury is stated to regard it with anxiety and to be apprehensive of a Russian occupation of Bulgaria, with its inevitable sequence, an advance on Constantinople. Turkey, too, is showing her apprehension of the impending danger by taking active steps to fortify Adrianople. Russia is strengthening her military forces in Asia Minor, and her naval squadron in the Pacific "
