FRANKLIN FIELDS.

PRINCIPAL EVENTS STEEPLECHASING RIVALS MAJORITY WITH WINNING FORM RECORDS OF FLAT PERFORMERS Officials of the Franklin Racing Club ' have every reason to be pleased with the acceptances for the first winter meeting to bo held by tho club uqder its own auspices. Last year's winter meeting was staged for the Bay of Islands Racing Club on Coronation Day and tho special occasion and other favourable factors made tho meeting an outstanding success that Saturday's fixture is not likely to surpass. In keeping with its winter character, tho principal ,race of tho day will bo the Onowhero Steeplechase. All tho acceptors have raced recently and all but four have won this season. Sanddrift has boon consistently in a placo as a hurdler and he should do equally well over country with tho minimum of experience. Three at Level Weights Tho two showings of AJio Lume at Tacroa in March were impressive. Ho just won tho McGuire Steeplechase from .Riotous, with Lueidus third and Saint Musk, fourth, in the Hauraki Plains Steeples on the second day, Riotous reversed tho result, which was confirmed in the Autumn Steeples at E'.lers_lie a month later. Mio Lume was not present at the Auckland meeting, but compared with their McGuire Steeplechase weights, Mio Lume meets Lueidus 61b. worse and Saint Musk 151 b. worse at Pukekohe. It is probable that these three, who aro all to carry 9.12 on Saturday, will constitute tho favourite division and tho most improved candidate may bo Saint Musk. The forward- running of nearlv all the acceptors for the President's Handicap in la to engagements will insure a great contest. Airafii will have conditions similar to those at Avondale, but sho will have more than her handicap weight in the Autumn Handicap, which marked her first success at ten furlongs. Grateful Consistent Grateful has put up some good performances of late weeks, following his second to Paso Robles in the Franklin Cup, running two thirds at tho Feilding Easter- meeting; on tho first occasion, to Wotan and Big Dook in the Cup, and on the second, to Catalogue' and Siegmund. In his three races immediately preceding, he ran second to Llangollen in the Tauranga Cup, third to Llangollen and Airam in the Hcrries Memorial, and he was runner-up to Tybalt in the Mclnnes Memorial at Whangarei. He now meets Tybalt 181b. 'better and Airam half a Btone better than when she beat him by a head at Tauranga. ' Rona Bay started twice at Matamata for a fourth in the cup and she is in the President's Handicap at a handy weight. She has won four races in a busy season. Valmint raced on the second dav at Ellerslie and did not give p.- indication of an early return to

fcnvu Miss Lu scored a double at Whangarei, the Waipu and Kia Ora Handicaps, both run over a mile. Opposed to her on each occasion wa§ Shy, who ran - third on the opening day, and compared with their second day weights, Shy has 71b. the better of the scale. Track conditions on Saturday, however, are more likely to favour Miss Lu. _Of those on*the minimum, High Tea • l is expected to do isrell, but the public choice may rest with Grateful and Miss Lu. Two of the acceptors for the President's Handicap, Grateful and Rona Bay, are also in the Paerata Handicap. However, among the smart sprinters engaged, the favourites may be selected from Sir Abb. Palustre and Tonnerre.
