SPEED 65 MILES AN HOUR DRIVER CHARGED IN COURT THEFT AND DANGEROUS DRIVING [by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION*] OAMARU, Monday The Oamnru police were advised from ■Timaru at 3.30 o'clock on Saturday morning that a motorist going south had stolen petrol. A watch was kept and the car came into Oamaru at a terrific speed. In an attempt to overtake it a police car reached 65 miles nil hour, and the car went through the town at 50 miles an hour. The police requisitioned a taxi, pursued the car to Kakanui, and found it on the side of the road. Two passengers were alongside the car and they made off, but were overhauled. The passengers in the car, which had been taken from Christchurch, were taken to the police station, where the driver's identity was learned. Oswald Oliver Wahrlich, aged 23, in surance agent, of Christchurch, was charged in the Police Court this morning with the conversion of a car valued at £3OO, with the theft of 12 gallons of petrol at Timaru, failing "to stop when signalled, and with dangerous driving. For the theft of petrol accused was fined £5, in default 14 days' imprisonment, and for dangerous driving he was fined £2O, in default a month's imprisonment. On the conversion charge he was remanded to Christchurch.
