SHOES AND LEATHER THE MARKETS ABROAD SLOWING-UP OF SALES Comment upon the situation in the European shoe and leather trade is made by W. Weddel and Company, London. in reviewing the hide market under date of March 17. The review states: — "The very uneasy and delicate international and political situation has probably accentuated the weaker-ten-dency of the market, and it is too early yet to say exactly how the position will develop. In the main, the market lias, to a large extent, been held up through the fact' that tanners holding fair sized quantities of leather cannot make any real headway in'their selling. "It would appear that prices arc naturally steady on the present low levels, but there is no substance in the bidding from the shoe manufacturers, who in turn complain of a similar position wth regard to the sale of shoes. In both cases the shoe manufacturer and the tanner have only very small supplies of raw material, but sizeable quantities of the finished article. This is exactly the situation in the United States, so until the hold-up in the sale of shoes and leather articles comes to an end there cannot possibly be much improvement to the hide market, but a change for the better from the retail end can come at any time now."
