CRICKET GOODWILL

AUSTRALIANS' VISIT PRAISE FOR BADCOCK ENGLISH CRITICS CHEERFUL LONDON, April 25 Illustrating the cordiality of the relations between the English and the \ Australian cricketers, G. O. Allen and ' R. W. V. Robins dined with D. G. Bradman's team at their hotel, after which they all went to the theatre together. This goodwill characterising the team'-s reception was not confined to official and public appearances. Compared with the pessimism of two months ago, English critics are taking a more cheerful line, although they hare nothing but two Australian practices on which to base their calculations. The Australians feel that English critics are focussing their attention upon Bradman and underestimating the talent of new players, for instance, E. L. Badcock. Some of the latter's colleagues expect him to become in 193S what Bradman was in 1930. "He's a 'killer,' that boy," was the comment of a team-mate, after reading comment implying that once Bradman is out the battle will be half won. INJURY TO BARNES REQUEST FOR SUBSTITUTE (Received April 26, 7.25 p.m.) SYDNEY. April 26 It is reported here that Mr. Jeanes, manager of the Australian cricketers in England, has asked the Board, of Control to send a substitute for S. G. Barnes, who severely damaged his left wrist in a fall aboard ship, and is likely to miss the first three tests. REPORT CONFIRMED REASON FOR REQUEST (Received April 26. 11.10 p.m.) LONDON, April 26 Confirming that he and Bradman had requested another player in place of Barnes, Mr. Jeanes explained that while the medical report says Barnes will not be available before July, they must bear in mind the possibility oi his being disabled even longer. They confidentially cabled the Board of Control some days ago, but the board has not yet replied.
