ROLLICKEk BEATS SPRINTERS „ Wet weather marred tho opening of the Avonclale Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting on Saturday, rain falling almost incessantly after tho second race. Tho track became heavy as tho day progressed, anil form received some Upsets. The only favourite to succeed Was Rollickcr. in the open sprint, the Railway Handicap, and there were several good dividends, General Ruse, Prival, Te Takina and Kena all paying double figures. The chief event, the Foley Memorial Handicap, was won by •the fourth fancy, Gay Rose, who again J- demonstrated her liking for soft going by finishing strongly to narrowly defeat the favourite, Francis Drake. - Tile attendance was good, considering the unfavourable conditions, more especially as there were showers in the morning. Approaching the turn Guard went to the front, closely followed by General Riske nild __ Vflfdso, then a gap to Mal-de-Mer, British Nation, General Ruse, Bonnybelle and King Silver. After they had gone a furlong Hunting Blood ran to the lead, to be four lengths clear of Highland t Quoen, Dragon Moth, Teak, Asset, Te Monowai, moving up fast, and Maxown. As they approached the home turn Hunting Blood still held a commanding lead from Highland Queen, Te Monowai, Fleetwind and Windcress. Just after reaching the straight the leaders compounded, leaving Te Monowai in charge from Fleetwind and Hutana, with Prival putting in a run from the rear. Crossing the top Galilee and Tonnerre were together iu front, closely attended by Palustr® and Rollicker, together, then Race Call and Anion, with Johnny Walls and Merial in the rear. Rounding the turn into the straight Johnny Walls moved up quickly round tho leaders and was just in front of Galilee, Rollicker, Tonnerre and Palustre as they straightened up for the run homo. Rollicker then made his bid and ran past the leaders to win comfortably by a length and a-quarter from Anion, who finished well over the last bit to bent Johnny Walls by a neck. The first to break the line were Arawa Hose, Mon Acre, Siega, Jack Tar ana Loombination. On settling down Arawa Rosd and Mon Acre were on terilis in the lead from Loombination, Alyth and Jack Tar, who were following in close order. There was no alteration crossing the top, but at the three furlongs Mon Acre fell and Loombination went to the front to lead into the straight from Alyth, Kena and Jack Tar, At the distance Kena and Alyth challenged Loombination, who bored out under pressure on to Kena, who gained the decision by a short neck. Alyth was two and a-half lengths away third and Barrister was fourth, then coming Aero King, Arawa Rose, Jack Tar and Gay Streak. Time, lm 44 4-os.

Erndaie showed the wftv into the straight to Crooning, who had run up very quickly, Valamito, To Hai, Light Comedy and Gold Vaals. The leading division bunched fit the distance and in a good race homo Gold Vaals won by a head from Valamito, who finished verv gamely. High Tea come home solidly to be a length and a-half away third and Erndaie was a fair fourth. Next to finish were Tip Toes, who was several lengths away, To Hai, Crooning and King Musk. VALDENE'S ESCAPADE While doing her preliminary before the Oakley Handicap at A.vondale on Saturday, the two-year-old filly Valdene attempted to run off the course and crashed into the outside fence near tho crossing where the horses enter the track to work. Her rider, A. Walker, was thrown heavily and received a severe shaking. Valdene took some skin off her legs and, although not seriously j injured, \\!as withdrawn from the race. I
