UNREST IN TUNIS
COMMUNIST RIOTS ROME PRESS COMMENT LONDON, April 13 Tunis, the French protectorate between Algeria and Tripoli, is ominously described by the Rome newspaper 11 Tevere as "another Spain." Communist riots there, says the paper, threaten similarly to (J upset Mediterranean equilibrium. The comment refers to the recent outbreak of violence in the city of Tunis. Eight rioters were killed and 40 wounded, while one soldier was killed and five were wounded. The native leader, Habib Bourguiba, with 13 other agitators and 60 rioters, has been arrested and a "state of siege" has been proclaimed. 11 Tevere charges France with administering Tunisia badly—"this, although it damages France most, also threatens the situation exactly as Red Spain threatened to upset the balance of Mediterranean forces." "Italy," II Tevere declares, "is interested not only in the maintenance of order in Tunis, but also in the restoration of justice toward the European inhabitants, mostly Italians." The newspaper does not mention reports that arms have been smuggled into Tunis from Libya. In Paris, the Right-wing organ, L'Epogue, calls on the Government to remove the French Resident-General in Tunis. It throws on him the blame for the rioting and bloodshed.
