SWIMMING TITLES

AUCKLAND CHAMPIONS . - IN; CRUMP'S RECORD SPRINT MISS GREY IN GOOD FORM The breaking of a New Zealand record for 100 yards free-style by N. Crump, performances close to record closs by other competitors and several •closely-contested races aroused enthusiasm at the Tepid Baths last night, when -the senior swimming championships of Auckland were held under the control of the Auckland Centre of tho New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. Crump lowered li. B. Frankham's record from 54 to ois. Splendid swimming was done by the interlanediate, Miss K. Grey. She won tho 100 yards ladies' free-style title in time less than a second outside Miss M. Farquhar's national rocord, t was runner-up to Miss M. Xeydon in tho "220 yards contest, registering figures superior to hor own Dominion inter- ✓ mediate record, and was alsi) second in the ~ race for the 100 yards backstroke title. This title was won in fine style by another 0 Intermediate, Miss 11. Stackpole. Tho carnival was spoiled by the small comber of competitors taking part in most of the events.

The fact that Cramp alone swam for the J. '3OO yards men's free-style title caused keen disappointment. Although lacking the stimulus of opposition. Crump,, a member of the North MShore Club, Instantly settled down to a deter•s joined attack upon Frankham's record. MakrplWf powerful strokes and using all his M strength, he sustained his speed over the full f distance and achieved the honour of breaking . the record. He was the record-holder until ,v Frankham put up-his time in 1935. A meritorious victory was scored by the 5 title-holder, Miss K. Grey, Otahuhu Club, 'i in a thrilling duel with Miss V. Coultliurst, S® Parnell. . Tho time registered by Miss Grey, 65 2 ss, :■! was only three-fifths of a second slower than the New Zealand record of 64 4-ss, estabI lished by Miss M. Farquhar in 1032. It excelled by three-fifths of a second the time % in which Miss S'. Gotlieb, of "Wellington, won -the national championships in Jauuary last. Throughout the 220 yards ladies' freeityle contest the champion, Miss M. Leydon, of the Ponsonby Club, had to contend with astonishingly strong resistance by Miss Grey. This girl was the first leader, but before 75 yards were covered Miss Leydon had displaced her. However, Miss Grey, in spite of her swim in the 100 yards race previously, pulled up again and both turned together •t 100 yards. They were still on equal terms after another 33 1-3 yards, and the fifth lap did not bring any change. It was not r sntil the sixth lap that Miss Leydon gained the ascendancy, and, drawing away from he; younger rival/ /she won by about three varda. Her time, 2m 43 3-ss, was not as fast as was anticipated. It was 3 3-5s slower than the Dominion record held by Miss I. Pnrdie, of Dunedin. Miss Grey's time, 2m 465, was two seconds better than her New Zealand record for intermediate girls. Among the best performances was that of HiM li. Stackpole, Parnell Club, the winner of the 100 yards ladies' backstroke championship. An intermediate swimmer, she had competed in a handicap race a little earlier, jet'the was timed at lm 17 l-ss. This was one second above the national record put up v recently by Miss J. Macdohald, of Inver--rtinrill. Miss Stackpole's only opponent was Hiss Grey, whom she comfortably defeated. Nevertheless, in view of her active part in u jthe carnival, Miss Grey showed good talent "•at the stroke.
