SHOOTING AND FISHING
ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY SUCCESSFUL YEAR REVIEWED Successful seasons for both shooting and fishing are reviewed in the annual report of the. Auckland Acclimatisation Society, which will lie presented at the annual meeting in Hamilton next Wednesday. The liberation of pheasants, the report states, has been increased from 2211 to 3346 and, in order to protect young birds, the society has pursued its customary policy of the destruction of vermin. Five additional grey ducks were obtained during the year, making a total of 21 stock birds, and a further J8 birds are now available for distribution to breeders. The council asked for the shooting licence fee to be raised from 2os to 30s, having obtained the consent of licence-holders, but permission was refused by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon, W. E. Parry. The higher fee, it is contended, would havp enabled the society to undertake greater liberations and also to pay more attention to ranging and the eradication of vermin. With regard to fishing, it is stated that, generally, anglers have had a successful season. Permission has. been given to increase the licence fee to 30s For the IIMB-39 season and it is held that this will enable the society to extend its hatcherv operations. So far this season 1357 licences have bpen issued, with a total revenue of £1255. Hatchery operations are reviewed at length and are considered to have been hiphlv successful. The financial statement shows that revenue for the year was £5347, exceeding the expenditure h.v £332. The accumulated assets of the society now stand at £2986.
