SUIT AGAINST MOTHER
JACKIE COOGAN'S EARNINGS EMOTION AT HEARING (Received April 19, 5.30 p.m.) HOLLYWOOD, April 18 Mrs. Bernstein, mother of the young film actor Jackie Coogan, gave evidence to-day in defence of the suit brought against her by Coogan, who alleges that his boyhood earnings have been withheld from him. She said not a penny of the fortune lawfully belonged to Coogan. "The boy is my son," she said weeping. "He is my son and I love him. I have done my best for him. I have tried to make a man of him but have not succeeded very well." Her answer was "So, absolutely no," when asked if she had ever promised her son, or intended to create for him. a trust fund. When asked: "Is it your attitude that all Jackie's money belongs to you," her answer was: "I believe that is the law." As counsel persisted in questioning her she buried her head in her arms and wept. Her husband, Coogan's stepfather, consoled her. The hearing was adjourned.
