FIJI POSTAGE STAMPS
NEW PICTORIAL ISSUE ATTRACTIVE DESIGNS [from oue own correspondent] SUVA, April 5 There was a keen demand at < the post office this morning when Fiji's new pictorial issue of postage stamps was on sale for the first time. Formerly Fiji, like some of the other Crown colonies, has been obliged to adhere to a set design issued for Crown colonies which contained the Monarch's head. The new design- retains the King's head on a small panel, but all values feature some typical scene or figure. The canoe design has been used fairly freely, being used on three of the eleven stamps. The halfpenny stamp is in green and features a canoe. The one penny is blue and brown and shows a village scene with huts and coconut palms. The penny halfpenny in red also shows a canoe. The twopenny stamp contains a map of the Fiji Giroup carried out in olire green and brown. The threepenny, which is in blue, shows a canoe, and an opposite panel to the King's head carrying the coat of arms of Fiji. The fivepcuny stamp in red and blue features a clump of .sugarcane, and the sixpenny also carries the map of the group carried out in grey. The , shilling stamp is dark grey with a splash of orange denoting sunset, and shows a Fijian fishing with spear and torch. The two shilling shows a view of Suva Harbour in mauve, and the two shilling and sixpenny in brown and green displays a river scene. The five shilling stamps has a native - hut and a coconut palm as the central scene. The adoption of a typical pictorial issue has given considerable satisfaction in the colony, where many requests for it have been made for a number of years past.
