DUTY ON GUMBOOTS
POSITION IN AUCKLAND Auckland importers of children's small gumboots above size nine are still required to pay 7s 4d a pair duty on them, in spite of recent advice received by the president of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association, Mr. H. W. Shove, that there had been no alteration in the tariff on this line, according to a statement made yesterday by Mr. E. E. Kitchener, on • behalf of"the Bureau of Importers. In response to a telephone inquiry from Mr. Shove last week, Mr. M. R. O'Shea, secretary of the New Zealand Footwear Manufacturers' Federation, said that the footwear in question, being less than 9Jin, in height, was now under a separate item, and should sell in the shops for Is lid. - "Merchants cannot get delivery in Auckland to-day without paying 7s 4d a pair, over size nine," Mr. Kitchener said. "Whatever has happened in Wollington, so 'far no instructions have been received bv the sub-collector of Customs in Auckland." The Customs Department in Auckland said yesterday that importers would be required to pay the 7s 4d in the meantime if the articles referred to were under 9sin. in height and vet 10 or over in size. It was not known whether the Minister's interpretation had been sought in this respect. ■ "
