HISTORY OF FIGUREHEAD
LOANED TO NAVAL BASE Particulars of the history of the figurehead included in the SeddonJohnson estate taken over as a bequest by the Rotorua Borough Council and forwarded on loan by the council to the Devonport Naval Base were given yesterday by Mr. F. J. Burt, of Matata, Bay of Plenty. Mr. Burt said the figurehead was acquired by his father, the late Mr. H. R. Burt, in 1883, when he was travelling bv coach from Wellington to Foxton, via the Otaki Beach. The figurehead, which had probably belonged to a whaling vessel, stood in a garden near the Waikanae end of the beach when the late Mr. Burt purchased it. It was taken to Cambridge, and, in about 1886, to Rotorua, where it was subsequently acquired by the Seddon family.
