WOOING PORTUGAL
BRITAIN CRITICISED GERMAN OFFICER'S ARTICLE LONDON. April 10 Mr. Chamberlain's inclusion of Portugal among the countries in whose defence Britain would automatically fight evokes comments 011 British "wooing of Portugal" in a German military periodical, the Deutschewehr. Major Welsch asserts that the conversations now proceeding will be less easy and satisfactory for Britain than London pretends to think. He uses a map showing the triangle Lisbon, the Azores and Cape Verde Islands as representing a most important British strategic naval position, and assorts tliiit Madeira or, better still, Lisbon, would provide an ideal base for the blockade of the Straits of Gibraltar in the event of a Mediterranean war. The writer claims that Portugal needs Britain less than Britain needs Portugal.
