H AMUR AH WINS

DONCASTER HANDICAP N UFFI ELD'S GOOD EFFORT DEAD-HEAT IN THE ST. LEGER (Received April 17, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 17 The highlight of the opening day of the Australian Jockey Clubs Autumn Meeting at Randwick yesterday, which was favoured with delightful weather, was Nuffield'* stylish win in the Sires' Produce Stakes, turning the tables on Pandava, and thus for the time being deciding the respective merits of these good colts. The speedy Victorian, Fort Regal, also did well to deprive Pandava of second. The attendance was 67,000, compared with 49,600 last year. Confidence Justified The Doncastor Handicap, in which there were 22 starters, was as usual a hard race, wherein the consistent Salmagundi mare Hamurah again justified generous public confidence. Hamurah was always at the head of the field, with King's Head, who went down lighting. Uuzalong, who finished third after being badly placed, came with a terrific burst, and is expected to do well later. Evening Mist, Mohican and Yalbeau, all of whom wero heavily supported, did not flatter the hopes of their supporters. During the tussle up the straight King's Head repeatedly tried to savage Hamurah, who otherwise probably would have won more convincingly. King's Head's jockey, L. Bartle, thought that his mount would have won only for his savaging tactics. Allunga Succeeds Allunga returned to public favour by taking the Autumn Plate alter a stirring duel with the evergreen Sarcherie. Allunga's connections now regret his withdrawal from the Sydney Cup. Others to provide good Sydney Cup trials besides Sarcherie were L'Aiglon, Aitchengee, Apollo and Billy Boy. Sir Regent pulled up badly, having had a recurrence of leg trouble. The St. Leger was a two-horse race, resulting in a dead-beat between John Wilkes and Cathartes. The latter's connections are now more elated with his Sydney Cup chance than that of John Wilkes. New Zealand representation at the meeting was negligible compared with former years. .Results: — FIRST HURDLES, Of £300; about 2 miles KEEWONG, C. L. Genetout was a length away third, with Aitchengee fourth, and then came L'Aiglon, Donaster, Apollo and Old Rowley. Sir Regent began splendidly, but was never dangerous and finished in the ruck. With a furlong to go King's Head and Hamurah were still disputing the lead, but the lightweight Hamurah finished the better in the last few strides to win by a head.
