CIVIC LEAGUE

PAST YEAR'S WORK ACTIVITIES OF MEMBERS RAILWAY STATION NURSERY A comprehensive review of the year's work occupied the attention of members of tho Auckland Civic League at the annual meeting held in the Penwomen's Club rooms yesterday afternoon. Tho president, Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, presided.

The report presented by the honorary secretary, Miss P. Butler, covered a wide range of activities. Many matters of public interest had been dealt with, including juvenile delinquency and drinking at dance halls. Tho league had made further strong appeals to the Minister of Justice and the Minister in charge of the Police Department for the appointment of women police in New Zealand. The City Council, the Transport Board, the Harbour Board and tho Health Department had been approached regarding matters of public interest and strong support had also been given to the National Council of Women's effort to secure prison reform. The establishment of a successful children's kindergarten and nursery on the roof of the new railway station in Wellington, where mothers, when shopping, were able to leave their children in the care of a fully qualified Piunket nurse and a kindergarten mistress, was commented 011 by Mrs. Gordon, who urged tho desirability of a similar nursery at the Auckland railway station. It was decided at the meeting to approach the Minister of Railways asking if this could be done. Improvement in the travelling conditions on tho railways was also spoken of by Mrs. Gordon. A tribute was paid to the splendid work done by Miss Baker, who was retiring from her work as honorary secretary of the league. Mrs. Gordon, who has been president of the Civic League for 11 yfears, was again re-elected. The other officers elected were: —Vice-presidents, Mrs. A. J. Mathias and Mrs. G. D. O'Leary; executive, Mrs. Jack, Miss E. Brown and Miss L. Williamson; honorary secretary, Miss L. Williamson; honorary treasurer, Mrs. A. Hunter; assistant honorary secretary, Mrs. A. J. Mathias; delegate to tho National Council of Women, Mrs. J. M. Wilkinson; honorary auditor, Mr. Norman Duthie.
