CHAMPIONSHIP DATES APPROVAL OF RECORDS [by TET.KGItAPH —I'll ESS ASSOCIATION'] CHKISTCHURCH, Thursday The dates for the junior and intermediate championships were fixed tonight by the council of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association as January 25, 26 and 28. it was decided that all copies of correspondence between the council and swimmers chosen for national honours should be forwarded to the centres concerned, following a report from the president on his recent interview with the Auckland centre. A letter was read from ,"\lr. H. Goldsmith, delegate to the council, expressing appreciation of the visit and stating that Auckland would now,work with renewed effort for the good of the-sport. The former decision of the council to declare the butterfly stroke illegal for the breaststroke competition is to be discussed at a conference of centres to be held before the opening of next season. The strolSe is not. banned by the International Federation, but has been held by the English Association to be illegal. Records approved were:—lOOYds. senior breaststroke: Miss Joyce Macdonakl, lm 16 l-ss, at Gisborne. 50Yds. junior girls' breaststroke: Miss Mary Stewart, 40s, at Dunedin. oOYds. junior girls' backstroke: Miss Nani Kira, 37 2-ss. at Hamilton.

A pan-Pacific swimming competition as part of the centennial celebrations in New Zealand in 1940 is proposed. The council decided to communicate with • all countries bordering the Pacific asking if they would bo prepared to send teams of swimmers and divers to compete at the meeting, the venue of which was not discussed.
