SOUTH MAIN TRUNK
TWO MILES FROM KAIKOURA HALF WAY TO CHRISTCHURCH [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] BLEXHEIM, Thursday Construction work on the northern section of the South Island Main Trunk railway has reached within two miles of Kaikoura, which is roughly midway between Blenheim and Christchurch. Operations now extend over a length of 40 miles of the route. On this section alone the men engaged on all classes of work total 410, representing a reduction of 40 coinpared with five months ago. The Falling off in staff is due to employees going to other work. The majority of the men are working between the Clarence River, where a large bridge is being constructed, and Kaikoura.
