FIFTY YEARS AGO

WAIKUMETE CEMETERY 1

Waikunieta Cemetery was not in favour with Auckland residents half a- century ago, as can be seen from the following extract from the New Zealand Hejiald of March 31, 3888:—< "It cannot/be denied that there is a deepineated and general sense of dissatisfaction with Waikomiti as the site of the! general cemetery. The feelin has had its origin in the great inconvenience of the distance and the cast imposed on the relatives of deceased persons, especially those' of humble means, as well as the singularly bleak and dreary aspect of this new city of the dead. The City Council have spared no expense in the endeavour to strip the place of, its air of desolation, but the feeling against Waikomiti is so strong, and the efforts, to find more convenient cemeteries so persistent, that the demand must sooner or liter be attended to."
