FIVE-DAY WEEK HAMILTON AND ROTORUA SOUTH AUCKLAND AWARD RATES OF WAGES FIXED "Tho only matter referred to the Court was the dato of the coming Into force of tho award," states tho memorandum to tho new award for South Auckland butchers, issued yesterday by Mr. Justice Hunter, president of the Second Court of Arbitration. Tho hours of work, it added, as well as holidays and closing hours for the boroughs of Hamilton and Rotorua, were agreed to b.v tho parties and were included at their urgent request, although the Court expressed no opinion whether or not they strictly complied with the provisions of section 6ii of the Shops and Offices Act, 1921-22, and its amendments.

Tho award, in so far as it relates to wages, shall be deemed to have come into force on January 1, 1938. The ordinary hours of work shall not exceed 44 in any ono week and in Hamilton and Rotorua they shall be spread over fivo days. All work done in excess of the hours specified shall bo deemed overtime and shall bo paid for at tho rate of time and a-half, except on Sunday, Christmas Day and Good Friday, when double time shall be paid. Special provision is made for holidays and an annual holiday of one week on full pay. Closing hours are fixed for Hamilton and Rotorua and for outside areas are to bo governed by the Shops and Offices Act. Boys and youths' wages rang© from £1 5s a week for boys between 15 and 15} years to £3 12s 6d to youths between 20 and 21. No boy under 21 shall carry quarters of beef. Other wages are as follows: —First shopmen or men in charge, £6 ss; second shopmen, £5 12s 6d; first small-goods men, £tf ss; slaughtermen, £5 12s 6d; man in charge of hawkers' cart, £5 12s 6d; all other hands employed in connection with the business, £5 ss. Minimum rates of pay for female clerks and cashiers range from 15s for girls under 17 in their first year to 55s for those in their seventh year. •
