LONG DRY SPELL ENDS
RELIEF FOR TARANAKI SERIOUS WATER SHORTAGE [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] NEW 'PLYMOUTH. Thursday The long dry spell that has been causing anxiety in Taranaki was broken on Tuesday night and early in the morning by heavy showers, which will do immeasurable good. Up to Tuesday tho rainfall in North Taranaki had been threequarters of an inch for the whole of March. Fortunately heavy dews have been saving the pastures, though in some districts, particularly along the coast, the grass had been drying up badly. Shortage of water has also been causing great inconvenience to country dwellers. In several instances women on farms reasonably close to town have been forced to bring their washing in and use the facilities offered by friends, as their tanks were dangerously low. Some country hotels that relied on tanks have also been feeling the shortage acutely. They have not been able to provide baths for lodgers.
