MANAWATU FIELDS TROTTING AT AWAPUNI ZINCALI EARLY CUP FANCY [by TK.r.F.C.It \l>H OWN CORRESPONDENT J PALMERSTON NORTH. Wednesday Acceptances received for the Manawatu Trotting Club's meeting at Awaptini on Saturday totalled i 29, an average of 16 a race. From Auckland Province 32 acceptances were made. The most notable defections in the Manawatu Trotting Cup, for which 12 horses have been paid up, are Bexley Girl, Royal Jewel, Marlcne, Ace Pot and Donald Dhu. Trainers who arrived to-day were: — A. Garuett, with Baron Grand, Pampas, Terraplane, Frontier Boy and Native Worry; A. J. B. Norris, with Wi'nawav, Winhisway, Kia Kaha and Derby T.u; C. Moran, with Valdor, Hottentot and Compass; G. H. Stubbs, with Autumn Lou and Worthy Quest; W. J. Wheeler, with Reception and Fk.sh Bye; L. Laver, with Great Sonoma and Querida; L. J. Mahouey, with Vanora. Native Worry, Compass and Querida are not engaged ncre. The first-named will be returned to his owner at Ashhurst. Compass and Querida are to race at the Taranaki meeting.
The Cup field is particularly strong and includes the Wairarapa Cup winner Zincali, Savoldi, winner of the President's Handicap,' two miles, at Nelson, Trevor de Oro and Shrewdie, who ran a dead-heat in the two miles at the Manawatu spring meeting. Our War, dual winner at Thames, Red Frontier, a winner over the distance at Epsom last month, and the consistent, if unlucky, Treasure Bond. Horses engaged who have won at a middle distance include Policy, Chili Bean and Sports Review, while Baron Grand, who is giving away handicap, has been twice second this season at two miles.
A surprise defection is .Marlcne, who was a strong fancy on the appearance of the handicaps. At this stage Zincali, Trevor do Oro, Shrewdie and Our War make a strong appeal in the Cup. The shorter distance of the President's Handicap may appeal to Chili Bean. Sports Review and Winaway. Shrewdie won well at ten furlongs in November and Our War scored at the same distance at Thames, where Baron Grand was in a place. Fresh horses are Valdor and Hearsay. Hearsay has won two useful races this season and he may dispute favouritism with Shrewdie-, Our War and Chili Bean
Twelve trotters nro to contest the McDonald Handicap Lf Princess Beverley succeeds in the Awapuni Handicap she should again he hard to heat, at two miles? Nelson Chief showed returning form at Hntt Park. Waingake won so well on his last visit to Auckland that lie must he respected. Araptii is returning *o form and he races particularly well at Awapuni. Great Sonoma may ho one of the most dangerous. but he may experience very stubborn opposition from Princess Beverley, Nelson Chief and Arapni.
CAULFIELD RESULT WHERNSIDE WINS HIS DIVISION (Received March 30, 0.20 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March 30 Racing at Caulfield to-day, Whernsido won the first division of the Welter Purse.
