FALL INTO CREVASSE
YOUNG MAN DROPS 60FT. SAVED BY JUTTING LEDGE RESCUE BY TWO COMPANIONS [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT | HASTINGS, Sunday When he fell cVwn a crevasse 60ft. deep while exploring a limestone cave at Coonoor, near Dannevirke, on Saturday afternoon, a young man from Dannevirke, Mr. A. Clapperton, was saved from serious injury by a protruding ledge 20ft. below the floor of the cave. Accompanied by several companions from Dannevirke, Mr. Clapperton had entered the cave, the floor of which rises steeply for a short distance, and then falls away to end abruptly in a crevasse. He was ahead of the rest of the party, when he slipped over the edge.
There is a large cavern at the bottom of the crevasse, through -which a stream runs. This stream was once worked for gold, and a prospector constructed a ladder from the cavern to the floor of the cave above. Mr. Clapperton was seen by a member of the party, Miss G. Hood, attempting to climb from the ledge by the ladder. He slipped, however, and, twisting his back when he fell back on the ledge, was unable to climb the ladder again. Two members of the party, Messrs. A. Anderson and K. Thomson, went to his assistance, and he was brought to the surface in a dazed condition.
