SLY GROG-SELLING
BAKER TO PAY FINE PONSONBY ROAD SHOP VISIT PAID BY CONSTABLE Two charges of sly grog-selling on January 25 and January 28, were preferred against Leslie Ansley, baker (Mr. Sullivan), in the Police Court, before Mr, F. K. Hunt, S.M., yesterday. Constable Hunter said in evidence that ho went to defendant's shop in Ponsonby Road, in company with another man, at 8.45 p.m. on January 25. They went through the shop to the bakehouse at the back, where defendant, at the request of witness' com-, panion, produced two pint bottles of beer. Witness paid for them, the price being Is 8d Before witness left six other men had come in and bought beer. Mr. Sullivan then said that defendant, who had previously pleaded not guilty, wished to change his plea to one of guilty. Sub-Inspector Flanagan, detailing the evidence on the second charge, said Constable Hunter called at the shop again on* February 28, when "a search warrant was executed. Only a small quantity of liquor was found. The Magistrate: What is a small quantity? Mr. Sullivan: Thirty-five bottles, for the week-end, for himself. Defendant was a married man .with one child, continued Mr. Sullivan, and had made only small profits on tho liquor sales. He asked for leniency on account of defendant's good record. "There are degrees in these eases," said the magistrate. "I will take into consideration the fact that lie has pleaded guilty, and has not gome into the box and told 'fibs,' as many of them do." When defendant had given an undertaking not to sell liquor again, the magistrate convicted him and fined him £ls on one charge, and convicted and discharged him on the other.
