BAKERS' HOLIDAYS
EMPLOYERS' REQUEST LEGISLATION SOUGHT A request for assistance in an attempt to secure legislation prohibiting undue advantage to non-employers over employers in the matter of work and conditions imposed upon manufacturers by Arbitration Court awards was made in a letter presented at the meeting of the general committee of the Auckland Manufacturers' Association yesterday from' the secretary of the Auckland Master Bakers and Pastrycooks' Association, Mr. S. S. Green. "Under the provisions of our award," the letter stated, "baking is prohibited on ten holidays during the year and workers receive this benefit at considerable cost to the employers. Yet the non-employers of labour are able to bake bread and deliver it to customers on these days, taking away customers and undermining the business of employers because of being able to give this extra service." In addressing the meeting Mr. Green said tho Court at the present time was limited in its powers. 'lhe master bakers would appreciate assistance of the Manufacturers' Association in obtaining the legislation necessary to remedy the matter.
