JAPANESE REPULSED YELLOW RIVER CAMPAIGN HEAVY CHINESE LOSSES By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright HANKOW. March 8 After crossing the Yellow River in North Shansi, the Japanese were hurled back by irresistible Chinese counter-attacks. The Japanese are now shelling Chinese positions across the river. A message from Shanghai states that the Japanese compute the Chinese casualties to date at 800,000. Half-a-million Chinese are now operating on the various fronts. DEFENCE OF SHANSI CHINESE DETERMINED DESTRUCTION OF BRIDGES [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Wednesday The following cablegram from Hankow has been received by the Chinese Consul: "A military spokesman stated that the Chinese will defend Shansi to the last man and are determined not to retire across the Yellow River. They have destroyed all the bridges and railway carriages on the southern sector of the Tung-pu railway, and all vessels and junks belonging to people in the vicinity of Fenglin have been removed elsewhere." MISSIONARY SLAIN METHODIST STATION LOOTED SHANGHAI. March 8 An English missionary, Mr. R. H. Goldsworthy, and a number of Chinese students, were killed during the looting of the London Methodist missionary station at Yunnan.
