CALIFORNIA AND DOMINION PLEA FOR EXPANSION An outline of the work of the Los .Angeles Chamber of Commerce, with a plea for a greater exchange of trade between New Zealand and California, ■was given yesterday at a luncheon of tine Auckland Chamber of Commerce by Mr. E. F. MacDonough, trade commissioner from the Los A'Jtgelei chamber. Beginning primarily as a tourist organisation, the Los Angeles chamber, which is one of the largest in the world, and has a membership of ] 0,000, is now concerned with fostering the industries of Southern California Mr. MacDonough said that as no representative of the chamber had b?en to New Zealand for a considerable time Le had been sent to establish contacts and to investigate the prospects of reciprocal trade. Mr. MacDonougli stressed the increasing speed of comriunications, which made the two countries comparatively close neighbours, and mentioned the repercussions which restrictions in trade would cause. "We cannot remain isolated," he said. "F.acii cf us produces goods the other wants, and we are bound to trade together. I am a believer in internationalism, unJ I also believe thalr English-speaking peoples must stick together." Mr. MacDonough was introduced by Mr. Arnold Ely, who presided, and was thanked for his address by Mr. J. M. Hardcastle. He arrived in Auckland a fortnight ago and since then has been visiting southern centres. He is to leave for Svdney bv the Monterey on March 18.
